What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are a class of injectable medications that use different ingredients to fill in fine lines and wrinkles for a fuller, more youthful look. Common brands of dermal fillers include:

• Juvéderm® products: Juvéderm XC, Voluma®, Volbella®, Vollure™
• Restylane® products: Restylane, Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Refyne, and Restylane Defyne
• Belotero Balance®

All of these dermal fillers are FDA-approved and recommended by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery to rejuvenate wrinkled and sagging skin, and thin lips.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers primarily contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that helps your skin retain water. Hyaluronic acid is present in your skin but decreases in quantity as you age, resulting in sagging cheeks, under-eye circles, and thin lips.

By injecting hyaluronic acid fillers at strategic locations, your provider can improve the fullness and youthfulness in your face for younger, tighter-looking skin and fuller lips.

Where can dermal fillers be used?

Since you can choose from many types of fillers, it’s best to discuss your aesthetic goals with your provider in order to determine which product is best for you. Certain products are recommended for specific areas of your face, including:

• Forehead
• Under-eye area
• Cheeks
• Jawline
• Smile or laugh lines around your mouth
• Wrinkles around your mouth from smoking
• Lips

Your provider may recommend a combination of products if you want to improve the appearance of different areas of your face, like your under-eye area and lips.

What should I expect when getting fillers?

When you arrive for your consultation, you’ll discuss your aesthetic goals with your Brandon Riverview Medical Associates provider in order to determine which types of fillers are right for you. Your provider then maps out the location of each injection on your skin using a washable pen. Once you’re happy with the planned locations for your injections, your provider begins the procedure.

Your provider cleans your skin with rubbing alcohol, then uses a tiny, sterile needle to apply the fillers underneath your skin. Multiple injections may be needed to reach your desired results. Each injection feels like a small pinch or prick and may cause mild redness for a few hours.

In most cases, dermal fillers begin working immediately so you can notice a difference right away. As your skin absorbs the medication over the next 24-48 hours, you’ll be able to see your complete results.
